Marlins' Paulino suspended, placed on restricted list

08/20/2010 - New York, NY (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Florida Marlins catcher Ronny Paulino has received a 50-game suspension for violating Major League Baseball's Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program.

The team placed Paulino on the restricted list Friday after the official announcement was made by the Office of the Commissioner of Baseball.

The 29-year-old is hitting .259 with four home runs and 37 runs batted in over 91 games this season.

"To control my weight this season, I used a dietary pill," Paulino said about what triggered the suspensions. "Regretfully, I recently learned that the dietary pill contained a substance banned under MLB's drug policy. I am ashamed and saddened for disappointing and distracting my family, my teammates, the entire Florida Marlins' organization, and baseball fans. I accept full responsibility and all consequences for this mistake and therefore, choose not to challenge my suspension."

The Marlins recalled catcher Brad Davis from Triple-A New Orleans to take Paulino's spot on the roster.

The 27-year-old Davis has two hits in nine at-bats over three games with Florida this season. He was batting .287 with nine long balls and 34 RBI at New Orleans.

Chiefs' Treen Green out for Sunday's game
